Freight Class

What is Freight Class?

Freight class, or National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC), is a standardized way of classifying less-than-container load (LCL) freight shipments based on certain characteristics. For ocean shipping, cargo freight class is determined based on a variety of factors, including value, weight, length, density, and more.

There are currently 18 possible freight classifications. The lighter and easier to handle the freight, the lower its classification. High-value and potentially dangerous cargo will be given higher classifications.
