The site of America’s worst antisemitic attack wants to tell a story of hope

Years after the horrific mass shooting in 2018, Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue aims to rebuild with a new design to “balance the light with the darkness.”

The stained-glass windows at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh were miraculously not damaged during the 2018 mass shooting, the worst antisemitic attack in American history.  But the building, which also housed Dor Hadash and New Light congregations, is riddled with marks from the hate crime that killed 11 people, including markings above the door frames noting that a person died in the room. After years of mourning for the lost lives, the desecrated temple will undergo extensive reconstruction to create a place to help eliminate antisemitism and tell a story of redemption.
