Decarbonising logistics and services
Greenhouse gas emissions related to our logistics and services value chain account for around just 14% of our total footprint. But they are of growing significance for our business, our customers and for society in general.
Why inland decarbonisation matters
For many customers, land and air freight related GHG emissions make up a large share of their overall GHG footprint. To ensure our decarbonisation strategy delivers real end-to-end impact, we need to tackle complexity on land and in the air, as well as the ocean.
Maersk’s logistics and services operations differ significantly from our ocean business. Services are generally regional, subject to different regulations. To lead the transition, we need regional and product-specific adaptations enabled by improved emissions data and analytics, as well as certification.
Our ambition
We will deliver an emergency response to the climate crisis and take leadership in the transformation of the transport and logistics sector to climate neutral operations.
Our targets
Highlights in 2022
Priorities and actions
Our customers’ increasing requirements for end-to-end logistics solutions, and the need for sustainable supply chains, make our logistics and services value chain emissions a priority. Our actions in this area focus on inland transportation, contract logistics and cold chains, and air freight.

Strategic pilot for decarbonising inland logistics solutions
To support our customers with sustainable logistics solutions that run end-to-end, in 2022 we conducted a range of deep-dive analyses on the technical pathways required to translate our ambitions into meaningful decarbonisation opportunities.
We defined technical and energy standards, tested solutions, and explored their scalability. The insights enabled us to define a 2030 target for inland transportation as well as supporting strategic pilots and initiatives. Solutions include electrification of vans, vans and rail; lower impact cold storage refrigerants; and piloting sustainable aviation fuels.
